The beautiful byzantine temple of KAM Isaiah Israel houses the oldest congregation in Chicago, the predecessor of which claims to be the oldest synagogue in the midwest. Designed in 1924 based on fragments of photographs of a second-century synagogue unearthed at Tiberias, it was designated an official Chicago landmark in 1977.

Now, normally, a Northwestern grad would never admit to liking something in Hyde Park, but we both loved the architecture and the history of this building, and their warm, inclusive approach to religion. Plus, they have their own klezmer band.
